On a bitterly cold winter night, Robert arrived at Haven Ministries’ emergency shelter with no safe place to sleep, little clothing, no food and no reliable income. He needed help in nearly every area of his life—but he did not have to face those challenges alone.
In Robert’s own words:
“My name is Robert. I have been lucky. Haven Ministries has helped me so much. I have a hard time doing things like finding a place to live, taking care of money and going to doctors. Haven Ministries let me into the emergency shelter when I was sleeping on the street. They helped me get my medical card and provided me with food. I was able to get clothing from the thrift store. They also helped me with Social Security, which had stopped when I turned 18 because I didn’t know what to do. Thanks to Haven Ministries and the person they connected me with at the Jacob Sloan Center, I got my Social Security benefits back. Now, I have housing I can afford, and I am happy. Thank you to everyone who supports Haven Ministries so they can help people like me. Thanks, Haven Ministries.”
The Power of Comprehensive Support
Robert’s story demonstrates why Haven Ministries provides more than temporary assistance. Our programs address immediate needs while helping people work toward lasting stability and independence.
A Haven Ministries case manager connected Robert with agencies and specialists at the Jacob Sloan Center who could help him navigate housing, Social Security disability benefits, healthcare and therapy. Those connections included the Queen Anne’s County housing department, local housing managers and Social Security disability specialists.
His case manager also helped Robert return to his former job—a place where he had worked for many years. Going back to work restored more than income; it renewed his confidence, purpose and dignity.
While waiting for a decision about his disability benefits, Robert regularly visited Haven Ministries’ food pantry to supplement his limited income. When he moved into an affordable apartment, Haven helped him obtain furniture and household essentials through Hope Furniture & Home Goods and Our Daily Thread.
Today, Robert lives independently with continued guidance—and he is happy.

Robert needed nearly every resource Haven Ministries offers:
