Haven Ministries Outreach Journeys - Week of July 4th

The Heat was unbelievable last week and outreach was able to help several unhoused folks. For those of you who don't know, Haven Ministries meets folks where they are, those who are unhoused and in need of help. We are called by churches, private citizens, clients in need and government entities to provide outreach services. The majority clients we help are your neighbors who have lost their apartments or homes due to a medical condition and cannot work, folks dealing with mental health issues and folks who just cannot get a break from living from paycheck to paycheck and suffering financial setbacks.
Last week We provided Motel Rooms with help from Friendly's, Best Western, Court Yard Inn and the Shelter Alliance in Kent county.
Traveling is a requirement of outreach services, and we all know, the 3rd of July in Queen Anne's County is always an adventure but we managed to transport clients to motels, along with rescuing food from WAWA delivering it to community members and emergency shelter clients without incident.
The Jacob Sloan Center was open July 3,4,5 as a cool, safe place for our county residents. Kent Island Methodist Church gave us access to their ice machines so on early on July 3rd staff packed up ice for anyone who would need it and headed to the Jacob Sloan Center for the day. Most folks had places to be and the need was thankfully minimal. Grateful for Staff stepping up to work on a holiday, thankful for Friendly's , Best Western, Court Yard Inn and The Shelter Alliance of Kent County.
Thankful for all of you who support Haven Ministries with donations and volunteering-- you are supporting our outreach work.
We are always ready to help because we can depend on the community for support!

And this happened yesterday!
Yesterday had a good ending, a young man with no money or way to get home, walked, hitchhiked and got escorted by cops all the way from OC and ended up at McDonalds on Kent Island, when he contacted me at 4 pm he was looking for shelter or any kind of help. He was heading to Frederick, so a staff member and I drove him to the train station. He could catch the MARC train that goes from Batlimore to DC and then to Frederick. For a ride to the station and $16.00 in train fare, he has a safe way to get home. A worthwhile road trip that ended well!. I love this kind of outreach adventure!!
